How to Create a Perfect Day

by Marion

in Self Care

When we think of a perfect day we usually think of a day that is unlike our normal run of the mill working day. Perhaps we think of a day at the weekend when we don’t need to work or even a holiday. Often, though, we just don’t get enough of those special, perfect days.

If you took a “normal” day what elements could you include in it to turn it into a perfect day ? Who would you include in your perfect day ? What would you enjoy doing together? What would you enjoy doing alone? What activities or rituals would make your day perfect?

Here are 21 elements which make my perfect day

1.Early morning walk – It is wonderful to be outside before the rest of the world wakes up. It is a great place to clear your head and prepare for the day ahead.

2. Breakfast – I like to share breakfast with my husband. We sit at a table and have time to share our plans for the day. I will get up early to have a breakfast which is not time pressured.

3. A clean desk – If I walk into my office and it is untidy it seems to put a damper on the whole day. If my desk is uncluttered it is welcoming and seems to say – hey it’s a new day- a clear canvas to work with.

4. Opening my office blinds – I like to open my office blinds slowly and take in the view of the trees, the sky and the hills above my home. I am grateful every day for that beautiful sight.

5. Meaningful work – Everyone needs to be able to contribute and to be valued for their contribution. Work can be paid or voluntary but when I can do something that makes a difference I feel good. It brings a sense of meaning to life.

6. Learning something new – If I am still learning I am still taking part in life and I enjoy the challenge and the feeling of satisfaction.

7. Time with friends – I love being with people. True friends are so important – it doesn’t matter if it is a ten minute coffee break with my neighbour,  a walk in the hills  with a group of friends – interacting with people lifts my spirits.

8. A burst of creativity – I have always enjoyed making things and now I also love to write. I find it relaxing but also it gives me a sense of achievement. I enjoy the  feeling of being childlike and creating something that gives me pleasure.

9. A phone call with my daughter – My daughter is thousands of miles away and so it feels great when she phones. I listen to her latest life episode and I feel immense love and pride for her.

10.Doing something nice for someone – It doesn’t need to be something major – it can be small but helps the other person and makes me feel good too.

11. A time to tidy – This may seem rather odd but my environment has a huge effect on me. My home provides comfort and security and it seems only right to show my gratitude to it by looking after it.

12. Flowers – Especially in winter when there are a no flowers in my garden I really enjoy having flowers in a vase at home. It reminds of the summer past and the new seasons to come.

13. A cup of tea in the garden or in front of the fire – There is nothing nicer than sitting peacefully with a cup of tea. It is relaxing and refreshing to do it in the garden , on a summer’s day, but it is also comforting and calming to sit with a cup on a winter’s night while watching the flames in the fire dance.

14. Silence – I might be alone in this one but I love silence. I write without music or back ground noise. For me there is beauty in silence.

15. Time on my own – I like to be around people but just to have a little time on my own to think and dream really recharges my batteries.

16. Dinner – A time to catch up with my husband and perhaps some friends to share the stories of our day, to laugh and to listen.

17. Bath – A slow, relaxing warm bath  revitalises and calms all at the same time.

18. Soft fluffy towels – Huge soft fluffy towels feel great against the skin. It feels luxurious and gives me a sense of being well cared for.

19. A good book – I read many books usually in connection with work so a chapter of a novel or an adventure story allows me to lose myself in the pages and feeds my imagination.

20. Smooth sheets and a made bed – In my single days I often fell out of bed in a rush and fell back into it at the end of the day – exhausted. It was a total treat to sleep in a hotel where the bed had been made and the sheets felt soft and smooth against my skin. The pillows would be fluffed up and it was absolutely glorious just to sink into bed. I decided that was worth recreating on a daily basis in my own home.

21. Going to sleep and wakening up with my husband – This is the magical part of the day for me. My husband is the first and last person I see. He is a huge part of my life and going to sleep and waking up knowing we have shared a day together and still have the gift of another one tomorrow is a wonderful feeling.

So now it’s your turn. What elements would you include in your average day to make it a perfect day?

Hi Marion,

I enjoyed the way you described the perfect day. Several of the activities on your list, I cherish in my own life. I think people can easily dismiss meaningful little things that make the most difference. You bless many people and enrich your life and those around you.

Thank you Sandra
As a small child I loved to play with a box of buttons. I loved the colours and textures. Recently I watched a little girl play with empty biscuit tins and a wooden spoon. In the age of amazing toys – simple things still had a place.
It made me think about the simple things I have and how much pleasure I find in them.

Many thanks for you comment it is very much appreciated

Great post. I really liked this one and your list was perfect. I don’t know that I would add a thing and if I could have your list of 21 things everyday, that would be ideal. I really like this approach because so often we are focused on all the things that are going wrong, but when we turn our focus toward what we always want to be a part of our day we can have much better experiences. Great list.

Hi Sibyl

I enjoyed writing this post because it was such fun to think about all the little things that give me pleasure. None of the items on the list take up a huge amount of time.

Thank you for comment

It sounds perfect, Marion :-)

A lot of people don’t take the time to reflect what actually makes their perfect day and what they want to do with their precious time on Earth. You have, and now you are reaping those rewwards.

This is very inspirational. I’m not sure that I would have that many items, but it’s definitely something that I’m going to think about. Thanks.

Hi Karen

You might be surprised when you start listing your perfect day elements just how many you find. I totally agree – a little reflection pays huge dividends

Thank you for your comments

Marion,

I like some of the ways, specially times I share with my husband and kids. When we wake up in morning when kids are awake and they smile back, it is perfect day for me. Thanks for making my perfect night as I read it before going to sleep :-)

Ah Preeti

You reminded me of one of life’s pleasures long passed. Walking into my daughter’s room (before the teenage stage) and seeing her first smile of the morning as I woke her up. If I close my eyes I can still see it.

Thank you for your comments and for re awakening a lovely memory.

Loving this post. I don’t think I could disagree with you on any of these points. It was nice to hear how you value your environment so highly….something I think I take for granted. A perfect day can so easily be any day…..far away hills are not necessarily greener and perfect days are not restricted to when we go away on our holidays. Home can be and should be perfect too!

What I would add (and I am biased but hey!….) is to go to a fabulous yoga class or spend at least an hour doing some wonderful yoga at home.

Thank you for starting my day off on such a good note…moving house today and now not so worried about the chaos that will descend in a couple of hours time!

Best wishes.
Nicola

Welcome Nicola

Thank you for stopping by. I like the idea of yoga I have not done it for many years and indeed it could be something to revisit.

Good luck with the house move and in the weeks and months to come enjoy creating a wonderful new and loving environment for your self and your loved ones.

Please come back again and let me now how it all goes.

Best wishes
Marion

Hi Marion,

What a wonderful list! When I first started reading your post I was thinking of commenting on some, well, more tongue in cheek things – like my husband leaving the toilet seat down or a day when I didn’t receive a fruitcake.

But now? Your list has so many delightful things that I just had to sit and ponder it for a while before responding. I get in trouble when I leap before I look anyway :)

For me, I have a place in my house that I just love. When I sit in that room quietly or reading a book, I’m always inspired to think of all the things I have to be grateful for. Like your cup of tea in the garden. Especially when my husband comes up and joins me or one of my cats stroll in.

Thanks for sharing such a beautiful list. It was truly my pleasure to read!
Theresa

btw – my apologies if this post is a duplicate… I may have hit delete (or enter? not sure – it just disappeared!) when I first tried to post. Sorry and please edit or delete!

Welcome Theresa

I do like your sense of humor. Yes the loo seat could well be an element too. Isn’t it amazing how many things we can find to enjoy and be grateful for if we just take time.

Thank you for your kind words. I do hope you will come back and visit again.

Welcome back Farouk

These things are definitely mood changing and isn’t wonderful to discover that we do indeed have the ability to change our mood simply by changing what we think about.

Love this, Marion! I am always chasing that ever-elusive perfect day, but I come close more and more these days. It really is all about simple pleasures. I especially love #14–silence. It’s wonderful sometimes to be alone in a quiet house.

And now, I’m off to make my bed! :)

Hi Denise and welcome

Yes I think it is about simple pleasures. These are things that we can do for ourselves and sometimes we simply need to be aware of the things around us that we often take for granted such as a beautiful view.

I hope you enjoy that freshly made bed tonight.

Thank you for dropping by.
